Next event

Hi all,
As attenders of the last event in April may be aware, we were intending to hold the next user group event in July.
However, we have really struggled this time to locate a venue. Of course, we could hold it at one of the Symantec offices but that isn’t the point of this group. It’s been great to have the last two events at user venues.
As it stands, the next event will probably now take place in September.
In the mean time, does anyone have an office that could facilitate the next event?
If you haven’t attended any events yet and aren’t sure of the requirements of the venue, feel free to ask me any questions in this thread.
Hope to hear from you soon! |

What do you think of Wise 8?
Posted at: 03-03-2010
|

Just wanted to generate a discussion about the latest version of Wise. As we reported in a news feature when it was released, this version supports Windows 7 and has higher integration and functionality with Workspace Virtualization.
Wise users: Are you using it to migrate to Windows 7? Are you encountering any problems at all? Any tips and tricks?
Post your thoughts.

As you all know, the next Altiris UK User Group event is next month on the 21st of April.
This time, we’re extending the Q & A session and kicking it off with a Best Practice/Hints and Tips section with Paul Butler, Greg Slade and Phill Woon. Between them, they have a lot of experience with and knowledge of Altiris.
So, reply to this thread with:
-Any Altiris related questions
-Any products you would like to know best practices/hints and tips for
-Anything else you might want to know about
Anything you post will be answered in this session. For those who can’t attend, we are recording the Q & A session and will type up the notes for distribution to anyone who wants them. |

User Group event - your thoughts

Hi David,
I’ve pulled out some information from a comparison document that I had:
Altiris Client Management Suite v SCCM
-Altiris allows selected applications to be blocked, Microsoft has no similar functionality
-Within SCCM there is no virtualization of software, whereas Altiris allows you to create virtual software layers so that the software need never be installed on a machine. For similar functionality with Symantec you will need to purchase a separate solution.
-Remote diagnostics and application turn on/off is available in the product Real-time systems manager, this functionality is not replicated in any of Microsoft’s offerings
-Microsoft can only patch software created by Mircosoft, whereas Altiris will patch not only Altiris, but Microsoft, Adobe, Linux and a large number of common vendors are on the roadmap for patching in future releases.
Altiris Server Management Suite v SCCM
-Altiris SMS: MS have no end to end monitoring of distinct applications, no service level monitoring, no synthetic transactions, no virtual environment monitoring.
-Microsoft will not monitor applications running between servers and endpoints, Altiris will
-Performance monitoring on efficiency of server provisioning, quite simply, whether the server is for web services/apps/sql etc are being over utilised Server Management suite will not only report, but will alert you if the server has reached a certain threshold (defined by user) and is over utilised. Symantec can only tell you the state of affairs, it will not alert you and critical thresholds cannot be created.
-Microsoft have very little management capability on the VM platforms, ESX is not supported.
Symantec Client Management Suite vs. Microsoft System Center Configuration Manager
(formerly System Management Server)
• Offers complete process automation with extensive task automation and integrated
workflow capability.
• Can also manage other platforms such as Mac and Linux. (Microsoft System Center
Configuration Manager only operates on Microsoft Windows.)
• Comprises many best-of-breed technologies, including Symantec Ghost, Symantec
pcAnywhere, Altiris Software Virtualization Solution, Wise packaging technology, and
Altiris Deployment Solution.
• Client Management Suite offers complete zero-touch migration to the latest operating system.
• Offers a centralized Web console and is built on the Symantec™ Management Platform to offer
greater flexibility and integration with other Symantec and third-party products, including
Symantec Endpoint Protection and Symantec Data Loss Prevention
At a glance:
Altiris CMS: MS have no application blocking, no software virtualization and no real time systems management.
Altiris SMS: MS have no end to end monitoring of distinct applications, no service level monitoring, no synthetic transactions, no virtual environment monitoring.
I hope this helps! If not, I’m sure there is someone out there who can enlighten you. I’ve forwarded your query to a few technical gurus I know as well to see if they have any wisdom to share on this matter.

User Group event - your thoughts

Thanks to everyone who attended the event on Wednesday.
Please use this thread to share your thoughts on the event and any suggestions for the next event.
For instance, what do people think of an event that starts at 9am and finished at 2pm with an hour lunch break? This would make it more worthwhile for people travelling and also allow more time for presentations/demos/Q & As and, of course, networking.
If anyone would like the presentations from the event, please email info@altirisusergroup.com |

Venue for January Altiris UK User Group confirmed
Posted at: 04-12-2009
|
|
The next user group event will be held on the 20th of January at Mitsubishi UFJ Securities International PLC’s head office in London.
One of the committee members has kindly offered their office to facilitate the second Altiris UK User Group meeting. The address is:
Mitsubishi UFJ Securities International PLC
6 Broadgate
London
EC2M 2AA
The next event is shaping up to be a good one. Thanks to everyone that’s been voting in the poll - if you haven’t yet, do so!
So far, Windows 7 seems to be the popular choice of topic. How do people feel about a meeting focusing on how Altiris can help with Windows 7 migration? There will also be a panel of Symantec experts so there’ll be an opportunity to ask any burning questions you might have about anything Altiris.
We’re still looking for volunteers to speak about their own Altiris experiences so if you’re interested, please let us know.
For any further information, post a question on the forum or email info@altirisusergroup.com
Further details will be confirmed very soon but if you’re already sold, please RSVP to info@altirisusergroup.com |

Next User Group event - London, January 2010
Posted at: 06-11-2009
|
|
Planning has commenced for the next user group event!
It’s going to be held in London, mid-January 2010 - details to be confirmed.
There’s a new poll on the site so vote for the topic you’re interested in exploring at the next event.
More importantly, we’re looking for volunteers to speak at the event.
We’re looking for people to talk about their experiences with Altiris. For example:
- Implementation obstacles and how you overcame them
- Tips and short cuts
- Unusual environments: perhaps you used Altiris in a unique way
- Best practices
You can be as technical or un-technical as you like - the idea is to get Altiris users interacting and sharing their experiences.
We will also have a panel of Symantec experts to answer your questions and give out advice… but the beating heart of the user group is, of course, you - the users!
So if you’re interested in speaking, reply to this thread or email info@altirisusergroup.com
